More than 25,000 m2 of transparency via skylights and facades for the Erasmus MC Rotterdam

The Erasmus MC in Rotterdam is being extended in the period from October 2009 through 2017. Brakel Atmos has been asked to realise the skylights and the numerous glass facades in the new hospital.

Various Brakel glass constructions have been employed for the range of skylights and glass facades: BA-2 system, BA-4 system, BA-4S system, BA-CG system and the BA-4R system. Including: The Backbone of 300 x 20 m covered with a skylight, two large atria, a glass entrance canopy and various facades such as: a second curtain facade, spider system facades, structural rubber-on-steel facades, stainless steel facades and facades constructed from glass rod systems.

In the interests of both fire safety and daily ventilation, air supply is provided by 140 aesthetic Estra glass louvred ventilators, which are included in the glass facades. Brakel Atmos integrated 82 architectural Ventria top hung windows in the Backbone‘s skylight for smoke ventilation. Apart from these top hung windows, another 7 mechanical ventilators ensure the extraction of smoke and heat.
